How to write a Core Resume and how to save time when applying to multiple jobs

What is the best way to land an interview?

The very best method to stand out from a sea of other applicants' resumes is to build a customized resume that is targeted to the job you're looking for.

But, what happens if you want to apply to multiple jobs?

In today's competitive job market, having a good Resume that distinguishes you from other applicants is critical.

While a personalized CV tailored to a specific position is the ideal method to highlight your credentials, creating an unique resume for each job you apply for can be time-consuming.

That’s where a Core Resume comes in.

A Core Resume is an all-purpose resume that lists all of your key abilities, expertise, and accomplishments.

It acts as the foundation for all of your personalized resumes and is easily adaptable to various job applications.

How to create a Core Resume?

A core resume is a generic resume template that incorporates all of your employment history, volunteer experience, education, and abilities.

It's essentially a record of all the specifics of your professional life.

Having one single document with all of your employment history information helps you to have all of your experience at your fingertips.

This enables you to filter through your information and produce a resume tailored to each job posting.

What to include in the Core Resume?

Your contact information: this should be included at the top of your resume. And as it is not changing often it is one fundamental part of the Core Resume. This part should include:

  • your full name ( first name and last name)

  • phone number

  • email address

  • professional accounts, e.g.: LinkedIn, personal website, Git repository

  • other links, such as portfolio or presentation website

Professional Summary: this part again we recommend to place it at the top of your resume, and to briefly highlight your experience, skills, and accomplishments. Here you could also include keywords that will get through the applicant tracking software and will help you get selected for an interview.

Example:

Experienced and energetic Software Engineer with over six years of experience in developing web applications and back-end systems. Capable of delivering clean, succinct code that is simple to maintain and troubleshoot. With working experience in both small and large teams across numerous projects and organizations, I am capable of working autonomously from remote locations or in office environments as required by the client.

Work Experience: List all of your previous jobs, starting with the most recent at the top, including the company name, job title, when you worked there, and a brief description of your responsibilities and accomplishments. Be sure to focus on specific accomplishments, such as increased sales or improved efficiency.

Here you could also include part-time jobs or volunteer roles.

Example:

Worked constantly with product managers to re-architect a multi-page web application into a single page web-app, boosting yearly revenue by 35%. Leading and cooperating with a group of 5 developers to implement software features.

Education: Besides the educational institutions that you attended and the name of the degree you earned, you could also add things such as :

  • trainings

  • courses

  • certifications

  • diplomas

  • other degrees

Skills: Identify your major talents and abilities that are relevant to your professional aspirations.

Technical talents, such as competency in certain software or programming languages, as well as soft skills, such as communication or leadership ability could be included.

How to customize the Core Resume to various jobs

Firstly, you should eliminate the irrelevant work experience.

When you've finished your core resume, one of the most challenging tasks will be to identify particular job experience that would demonstrate your expertise to a prospective employer.

To keep your resume simple, just include employment experience and abilities that are relevant to the career you're looking for. No matter how certain you are in a particular skill, constantly ask yourself, "Will this impress a future employer?" If the answer to that question is no, then leave it out.

Also, try to limit the number of jobs that you add into your resume. The maximum length of a resume should be 2 pages.

Summary

In conclusion, a Core Resume is an excellent tool to have while applying for several jobs. It helps you to consolidate all of your experience and qualifications into one document, making it easier to customize your resume to the requirements of each job.
